LotusFella 118
thought I would create one thread for above, Ok got all bushes and ball joints replaced. But having trouble getting the conical bushes compressed to fit them into the chassis mounts. Anyone had this trouble and have a good answer. As the are expensive as f**k don't fancy man handling them in. thx
Barrykearley 6,968
Are they lotac poly? the non conical ones press in - the go in on the squint and straighten up. I’d never treat a rubber bush like these polys as they would just split. The lotacs - you need to breathe deep and be brave. Quote Only here once
LotusFella 118
definitely conical ones and that probably why the last lot went south as they were non conical. I have checked and triple check the wishbones are definitely conical type. Just having trouble getting them together enough to get then in the gap on the mount. oh and just started the car with the new PNM exhaust. Fantastic!!! sounds like it should. another job to complete getting it all lined up correctly. Will post a vid when its done.

Barrykearley 6,968
You need a world of lube, lots or patience and a rubber mallet. with the car off the ground - it’s easier to fit the whole arm facing downwards. Insert bolts and then pull upwards. itll take some sort of swearing Quote Only here once

Barrykearley 6,968
I don’t like calipers flopping around on brake lines - so I tend to just remove them Quote Only here once
red vtec 186
You need extra heavy duty swear words, standard ones won't do it. 1 Quote Amateurs built the Ark Professionals built the Titanic "I haven't ridden in cars pulled by cows before" "Bullocks, Mr.Belcher" "No, I haven't, honestly"
LotusFella 118
god it's taken me 4.5 hours to get the passenger side in and that was the easy side!!!! The ARB is stuck into the offside and was planning to leave it but I don't think I've got a chance without the arb out. I have got out the 2 circlips but I assume the bush is rusted in. Any way of getting it out or the arb
Barrykearley 6,968
Need to press them out Quote Only here once
LotusFella 118
wow. got them back in now. What a job. Please don't tell me most jobs are like that. Thank god I didn't pay a garage to do that it would have cost me a fortune! One problem is I got new track rod ends for the steering but they don't fit the hub properly. They say for Esprit 93 onwards. Bu they are too big so can't get nut up safely. could they be from an elan like the ball joints?
Barrykearley 6,968
It gets easier after the third time Quote Only here once
Clarky5150 96
Welcome to the 'FFS how hard is this (insert job title) on an Esprit compared to every other F'ing car I have ever worked on' club. The bad news is its always the same. The good news is all jobs on other toys become laughably easy from here on in! OMG I see you have an Alfa.. I am preaching to the converted...my apologies. Clarky5150 96
With the Esprit you end up redoing most jobs at least biannually anyhow so get used to the 'twice' scenario. If god had wanted us to play with reliable and easy to work on 80s style coupes we would all have 944 turbos.... but where would the fun be in that. (love 944t btw)
Barrykearley 6,968
The esprit really isn’t that bad to work on. im sure folks make out stuff is harder than it really is - either that or they just make it hard. top ball joint of a modern Peugeot is a c&&t in comparison to most things Esprit Quote Only here once

I'm sure its because people on here (especially Esprit owners) tend to do things themselves, and stories are created. Most other specialist car owners (Astons) and the newer breed of owners (Evora) bang it in to the garage so never know how hard their jobs are. silverfrost 1,390
As Clarkson says you are never really a true car enthusiast until you have owned an Alfa The early deasigns are very pretty cars but as Barry says and everyone knows they are all tinworm magnets sadly Quote A
