Steering Wheel Restoration

Recommended Posts

My steering wheel needs some attention as it's decidedly manky! The leather (is it leather?) is grubby and dirty mainly from mildew and the rubber crash pad has faded and now looks a brownish colour. Were both of these black originally? Has anybody managed to recolour the leather and rubber crash pas successfully?

Thanks, Paul.

The esteemed Dr. Fish, with Troy's help, re-coloured all his leather with Leatherique or liquid leather, I believe. I don't think it included re-colouring any rubber bits, though.

yep on both, i did this when i first got the car, get some good leather cleaner and give it a really good clean to get all the years of grime out of it, then get some black bot polish, i know it sounds strange but trust me, open the tin of polish, light a match and put it to the polish it will light up, let it burn fr a few secs till it liquifies then put the cap on to put it out. take cap off and with a good plish rag dab it in the polish and rub it in, keep doing this for a while till the leaher is saturated in polish.

then you can start the buffing process, if you not happy apply more liquid polish till you are it will then come up a treat.

That's a fantastic secret treatment, Si, and it looks fantastic.

I imagine the hard part, though, is turning the car 90 degrees on its side ! :)

Thanks for the info :)

Won't boot polish just come off on your hands when using the steering wheel though?

Cheers, Paul.

nope, work it in really hard and then you have to buff it really hard take your time dont rush it, you can then check its all off by taking a clean paper towel and rubbing it with that, if it picks up polish you havent finished it properly yet.

heres another tip, when you wipe the wax off your car, to make sure its perfect get a fine quilted kitchen towel, the best you can buy and with one sheet laid out flat, gently with you hand flat on it wipe down the panels, if theres still wax it will stick and not slide then you can gently rub and it will come off, get another sheet and do the same, that way you get the excess of that you cant see.

Cheers, Paul.
