Gear Linkage Help Needed

Recommended Posts

The previous owner of my car fitted a V8 engine into it at some point and for whatever reason cut the rear gear linkage. The round part has been welded onto another piece of metal and I've now cut it off. He kept the original bits and I'd like to try and repair it if possible. However, I don't know how long it should be and I can't work out what angle the two pieces need to be welded at. It looks like this...

If anybody has a spare I'd consider replacing it but I'm guessing that's a bit of a long shot so if anybody has one off their car that they could measure for me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Paul.

Paul,

There is an adjustable eye/loop on each end that holds a rubber bushing, ~17-3/4" center to center of the loops. Tell me if you need more detail, mine is off the car and easy to get to.

Can you tell me what size and any details on the body to chassis mounting hardware? What size are they, spacers or washers, any special nuts etc.

Hi Bill

Re body fixings - I'll check on the body to chassis mounts and get back to you, I've got to find them first!!

Re gear linkage - only one end has a loop, the other end has a threaded stud.

Regards, Paul.

Here is a quick pic...

Only 1 side is adjustable, I had wrongly assumed both sides (hoping to put rod ends on easily).

Hi Bill

Thanks for the picture. I see what you mean about there being loops on each end - the other loop is still on my car. When you mwasured the 17 3/4" was that with the adjuster wound all the way in and with the locking nut fitted? My other problem is trying to get the angle of the loop (which has been cut off) correct in relation to the rest of the bar. Would you be able to take a pisture for me end-on please?

Thanks, Paul.

P.S. I'll dig out the bolts and measure them this afternoon when I venture into the garage!!

There are two bolts on the front of the chassis which are M10 x 47mm x 1.5mm pitch (the 47mm includes the head so it's the overall length of the bolt). These two bolts have a big spacer between the body and the chassis. Down the transmission tunnel there are 4 bolts (2 each side) and they are M8 x 37mm x 1.25mm pitch (again the 37mm includes the head). These ones have large washers on them but they're not very thick. The back two are a bit trickier as mine didn't have either of them fitted. I'm 95% sure they're M8 but I don't know the length. However, it won't be a very long bolt as there isn't a lot of thread in the chassis. Mine has one of M8 and the other of M10!! I suspect the hole was enlarged at some point probably through movement and now it's M10.

Of course only the rear ones actually bolt into the chassis itself, all the others have nyloc nuts on them so you could actually put whatever you like in there as long as they fit!

All the above relates to my 1976 S1 by the way. Hope that helps.

Regards, Paul.
