Throttle Position Sensor

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've been spending the last few weeks trying to sort out all the problems with the car. This is the last issue I have at the moment... I despreately need help on this one. I need to switch out the TPS sensor on my 2001 V8. The OBD II reader I borrowed from a friend is only showing 40% throttle when I floor it. I ALREADY checked and adjusted the pedal travel and made sure the throttle linkage opens/closes fully and no wires are in the way. I thought the car was running in limp mode, but I got all of that sorted out (I think) as the car is not giving me any codes. I am running K&N filters and Johan's ECU upgrade. I need to know:

1. Where exactly the TPS is located.

2. How easy it is to switch out or adjust. Is this something I can do myself, or will I have to take it to the dealership?

3. Any how-to guides for this. The TPS guide in the Tech section is for the 4 cylinder motor and it's obviously not in the same location.

4. Any other relevant info I may need...

Thanks!

From the parts list illustration it appears to be under the plenum on the right rear. The P/N is A918E0005H it's description is "Throttle position switch (TPS)" See attached illustration (item #10). I have an '01 V8 and it wasn't visible on the exterior of the engine. There was a post by Mark Pfeffer that described the exact proceedure to remove the plenum, but I can't remember if it was on this forum or the Yahoo group.

Update: Just did a search on this forum and it was a response on June 16th, 2006 on a topic of "Idle control valve IACV picture???". Gotta love this digital world!

Thanks for All your Help!!!

Wow... Just read the post you were talking about. Sounds very complicated... May be a whole weekend project for me. Well, I'll have to order the TPS on Monday.

Another question...

Do you ave to take the throttle body apart to get the TPS sensor off. I got the bolts off and the connector off... But it seems like it's connected to the spring system inside the throttle body. Help is appreciated.

The TPS is quite a simple bit of kit. It basicaly works by sending a varying current to the ecu. It is usualy locked in place by two bolts. The shaft thay goes through your Throttle Boddies butterflies has a flat side to it that your lever arm and TPS locates on. I do not have the figures to hand at the moment but with throtle closed you should get a reading of about 0.5v-0.7v and wide open should be around 5v. I have not checked on these figures as yet but it should give you a starting point before you remove it. to adjust it you simply slaken of the screws and rotate it untl you get the correct voltage.

Hope that helps but if not I will try to explain it better.

Definately helps... But in the case where it is fouled up, how easy is it to take off and replace it with a new sensor?

Ok, so I just tried every pin combination for the three pins and every reading is reading ZERO (closed and open position). I hope Im doing it correctly... But since I believe it's fouled up these readings would confirm that. And how would I know if it's the TPS, the wire harness or the ECU itself that is not working correctly.

Anyone know how much a throttle position sensor is? I've been calling around and no one has one or they say they can't get one. I did get one quote of over $300, and even then he didn't know if he could get it. I just want to know if this at least in the ball park figure...

Thanks
