Mounting Fire Extinguishers

Recommended Posts

*I know this has been discussed before, but my search doesn't turn up much.

Before heading out to a Track Day, I would like to mount a Fire Extinguisher in the cockpit as well as the engine compartment.

The interior space is pretty limited, so I'm wondering what most of you have used as far as size of extinguisher, and placement. I don't want to be drilling any unnecessary holes in the cabin or the boot.

As a former firefighter, I have seen the potential of small fires, and I have also seen how effective a fire extinguisher can be, when used quickly, and efficiently.

Any photos and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

what would be easiest it to have a fire handle in the car with a link rod to a set of two extinguishers with directional nozzels in the engine bay and a small cockpit extinguisher under the dash.

fitted as standard to the wrc rally cars :)

Thanks Bigsi. I agree that would be nice to have. Money and time, however, may not allow that at this time. And I may look into that sort of set up down the road . . .

But if I were to go with handheld extinguishers mounted in the cabin and the engine compartment, does anyone have any suggestions or photos they would like to share.

Thanks,

Ed

'Tis dark now, so I will have to try and get a picture tomorrow, but I have a small fire extinguisher mounted in the drivers footwell just infront of the seat. It is alright for space, but I am a lanky sod who always has the seat as far back as it can go so I suspect that helps!

The size and mounting bracket are similar to one of these: FlameBeater

I like the way some Mercedes have an extinguisher discretely mounted on the seat frame under the driver's thigh. When I modified my seats I welded a simple bracket to carry a hand extinguisher. Basically there are two vertical flanges that the extinguisher bolts to and a couple of horizontal stays that make it all secure.

The extinguisher has two release clips to reduce the likelihood of accidentally knocking it loose. There is still full fore and aft movement of the seat. Is a bit of work stripping and refitting the padding but no major dramas doing so.
