400 - Leaking Window at A-Pillar

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

Has anyone else had an issue with water dripping into the cabin through a front window when the car is parked up in a rain-shower?

My leak seems to be coming from the area where the top corner of the mirror-mount connects with the door seal (as per pic A below).

Closer examination shows that there is a nick in the seal in this area (pics B & C below).

Common issue?

Hello mate. Mine’s leaking in the same place and is with dealer to investigate (along with another issue on noisy door cards). I’ll let you know what they come back with

Just checked mine and the seal is also torn, appears to be caused by the sharp edge of the "cheater seal" Part number B132U0793F. The seal isn't cheap, I'm also interested to see what the dealer says

If that fails, I’ve used a rubber adhesive called Black Witch before. It’s actually a neoprene adhesive, but it has good gap filling properties and works on EPDM too.

Good to know, also the edge of the cheater seal could be rounded of to prevent it happening, as its actually sharp on the corner which causes the issue.

Not sure if any help but on my S 12 you can feel something inside the rubber seal just above point A in your photo, right where the large drip is. I was able to move the thing inside the seal to re-position it so it bridged the pinch point in the red circle. It felt like a packing piece that had got itself moved over time so maybe it was designed to accommodate this issue.

The packer inside the seal is common practice and some times it’s used for stotting movement in doors and windows. In this case it is designed to ensure the seal closes the gap in area where the seal has a gap and this is case it’s adjcent to the cheater seal.

Based on this thread, I’ve modded my cheater seal top, as the way it moves across the rubber, it tends to cut the seal due to the sharp tip.

Had another look today - definitely a case of the sharp edge on the cheater-seal nipping the door-glass seal.

I can also feel the 'pillow block' as described by others in the door-glass seal.  The split in the seal is just below the block.

So, I'm going to need a new RH door-glass seal (part D132U4160F), and I'm going to soften the edge of the cheater-seal to it doesn't chafe the door-glass seal so aggressively (thanks for the top tip @au-yt 👍).

You could maybe try some Sugru to repair the hole in the seal.  Its a mouldable glue that stays flexible and rubbery.

I don't know how much a new seal is but I imagine its not cheap so might be worth giving a quick go with Sugru to see if  you can repair rather than replace?  I may have some spare in the tool box send me a pm of your address and I'll post some out to you if I can find it.

I'm pretty sure you're meant to keep it in the fridge mate, it goes off otherwise.

Thanks Bibs yep it is in the fridge but I thought that might sound weird on the forum if people didn’t know what it was so changed it to “tool box”.  😄
