I don't think you'll get a definite solution to this and you'll need to have a fiddle. I had a similar problem with mine and it was a broken earth spade terminal under the relay blocks. Maybe swap the bulbs over first to eliminate that. I'd then look at the relays by ns headlight. Can't remember which one does what but look in the service notes and you could swap a relay over that operates the dip headlights to check that also. All 4 relays are the same type so interchangeable. Then it's checking earth's and wiring.

Its nearly always a dodgy earth, or at least it is on my car!

Probably bulb.  Sounds like the dipped filament has gone.

Cheers guys, im thinking its the dipped filament as well. Is it a mare to change the bulb on these? (all my previous Lotus have been!)

Not difficult - they are all removed from the front with pods raised.  depending on year of manufacture there are different configs - you will either be removing a bezel, or turning some little nylon clips through 90 degrees to release.   Either way, rust is likely to be your main opponenent.   If you have 6" units, you will be limited to getting modified replacements from one of the usual specialists

(first step is obviosly to remove plastic rivets to remove plastic shroud)

ok so ive just done this job and it was a complete pain in the arse like everything is on this car. i removed the shround by snapping all 6 black nylon push clip things as no other way to remove them. then had to drill out 8 fugging rivits just to get the lamp out to change a bulb, i mean what the actual F!? Now need yet more parts just to change a bulb. Can see the car going in the summer.

My spider senses tell me you might not have a manual or parts list...

Manuals and partlists are on here for FFM guys.

if you are too tight or skint - then have a look at the deroure website - that’ll give you the partlist but no manual.

id highly suggest upgrading your membership.

What have I done wrong then? I could see no other way of removing the lamp unit other than drilling out the rivits to remove the plastic surround that holds the lamp? Or should this have had 8 little self tappers originally? The plastic mask fixings seem like a once use item?

If you look at the downloadable parts manual, it looks like there should be 8 plastic button clips (as 910esprit has already mentioned), not rivets.

Clearly, the rivets were a bodge by a PO is to blame, not the car itself. Neglect and ignorance is the scourge of the Esprit.

There were 6 black plastic button clips holding the black trim on all broke removing them they don’t have any slot for a tool or turn it anything like that. The bezel under the trim holding the lamp in place had 8 little rivets. I’ve replaced them with self tappers but now need new button clips for the facia

?? That justs sounds wrong....   There should have either been 3 (or is it 4) little plastic tangs that you turn through 90 degrees, or if you have the earlier setup, 3 self tappers securing the chrome bezel.  Sounds like you have either dismantled the later setup, in error, or have a non standard setup.   Can you take a picture?

If there ever was a time to stump up for full forum membership, this is it.  You need to be referencing a parts manual.

In the manual I’m sure it tells you exactly how to disassemble and reassemble these pods.

Breaking stuff can rapidly cost many times more than the price of FFM

Ok I think I see what I’ve done wrong. The little white plastic clips should be quarter turned to release the lamp with the frame.

What should the mask be secured with as the leftovers of what’s pictured is what it had.
