Does any know if the Esprit V8 crank is in forged steel?

I don't know the Lotus V8 facts, however forged crankshafts are quite expensive. I would think the Lotus shaft is cast as the tooling for forged would be very high for the low volume produced.

I agree but there should be someone here that knows the fact.

The V8 crank is cast, I broke one @ 140 MPH. Coolant leaked by the sleeve sealant and dumped lots of antifreeze. Harry @ Viking Motorsports was able to get steel rods, but not a steel crank.

Broke one?

How much bhp do you have?

Was it any particular reason why it broke?

If this is the case I will go for the 1uzfe engine to build my high hp engine.

DNA tests on the oil showed lots of antifreeze leading everyone to tell me the sealant used to seal the cylinder liners failed. This is a big problem with the first few years of the Lotus V8.

This new motor has not been on the dyno yet, but Harry @ Viking Motorsports has managed to get 480 bhp out of the exact same rebuild, and I have not installed the charge coolers yet. Car runs great once it hooks up in third gear.

Good luck

When we had a look round the warehouse at Avonmouth, there was a palletful of crankshaft castings that hadn't been machined.

Apparently they were left over at the end of the production run, and will be machined only when necessary. So I guess that means they're not forged.

Ok.. so Mike Sekinger said it was forged.. it weighs like a forged crank, it looks like a cast crank... Has anybody gotten an actual solid answer on this?

Modifying esprit's.. now that's fun..

V8 cams -cast iron

V8 pistons -cast alloy

V8 rods -forged steel I-type

crank- forged

(all as per manual guys ..)

*there was a guy who machined mine on the rebuild, he said that it is actually a good one choosen /made ..and he is one of the regular Santa-Pod competitors with his US V8 racers -so I have to believe ?

there even is a note in the 'printed books' ..in those additional papers , a note on most of the main components of the engine and the development/sources/partners

..what would be interesting is: -does the company that made nearly all of the casts on engine-block and additional sections still exist and have the models ? The badge of this company is on most alloy sections.

@Ben: the interesting point on your story, was this a batch of 918 crankshafts   ..and if so, how do you know it iwas a cast, and not only a pre formed forged one  ?..as you would only tell it by the structure of the unmachined surface (in case of fine sand castings)
