Picture of The Month – February 2017

It's hi-time we had the one and only 'hi-wing' Esprit Turbo SE for your desktop and mobile. While always polarising from day one, the hi-wing Esprit is looking pretty darn cool in 2017. This one was caught in the wild in Hong Kong by photographer and Lotus owner Ben Molloy. Ben's Elise S1 has seen more of the world than most. When he moved from the UK to Hong Kong he took the Elise with him and did the same thing again when he moved to Australia! “This particular Esprit Turbo – along with several others – was a regular participant at events organised by the Classic … [Read more...]

Driven: Lotus Exige Sport 380

In the damp gloom of a British winter you have to wonder why all the cars built here aren’t permanent four-wheel drive. Even more so, how one British manufacturer thought it was a good idea to put a 375bhp V6 in the middle of a diminutive, flyweight, rear wheel drive sports car. We’re getting so blasé about power now but 375bhp is Ferrari F355 horsepower and here it is in an Elise chassis. Speaking from personal experience, that much power could be quite a handful in a car with a dry weight of 1350kg. The Exige Sport 380’s dry weight is a King-Harold-slaying 1066kg. … [Read more...]

Picture of The Month – January 2017

Here's just the thing to blast away the January blues - a retina-bursting green S2 Exige. It's an appropriately intense hue for the evergreen pocket trackday rocket. This shot really captures the essence of the car - it looks taught, compact, dynamic and more fun than any fair ride. The streaks of light in the background suggest it's pulling more G than the Waltzers too. The shot was taken by Martyn Lewis, who is no stranger to PoTM, shortly after he had it so vividly resprayed and he still owns the car today. Martyn:  "I was heavily into my night photography at the … [Read more...]

Picture of The Month – December 2016

We figured you couldn't get a lot more seasonal than a snow and ice dusted, bright red Elise. So here's your PoTM for December, a dynamic rig shot and very dramatic angle, courtesy of New Jersey photographer Mike Hyatt. Mike's work has already featured for the month of August this year and despite some strong competition, this shot was always going to be hard to beat for December. Hopefully it will be enough to tempt one or two Elise owners to crank their heaters up and get out there to take a few shots of their own. Treat your desktop, smartphone or tablet this … [Read more...]

Picture of The Month – November 2016

What could be more appropriate for the 3rd of November than this 311 blasting out of Spa's iconic Eau Rouge corner? This particular example in sinister matt black with gloss black stripes is owned by a Belgian enthusiast who currently owns two 211's in addition to this, the very first customer 311 to roll off the production line. It is with his kind permission that we are able to share this image with you, taken by Curbstone's photographer at one of their recent track events. Not content with the factory output of 410bhp, the car has already been treated to a power … [Read more...]

Picture of The Month – October 2016

October's winner is hot off the press from James at Oversteer Photography. Posted only this week on Facebook, it shunted the image I had lined-up smartly into next month. Many thanks to James for his kind permission and for being so helpful at very short notice. Of this captivating shot, he had this to say: "I was asked by a friend to shoot his father-in-law's prized possessions: His incredible Lotuses. This is one of the most difficult shoots I've had to edit, two light painted cars in one shot isn't easy... I've always been a huge Lotus Cars fan, the Esprit … [Read more...]

Picture of The Month – September 2016

This month's winner features a number of notable 'firsts'. It's our first winner from Norway. It's definitely the first Exige we've seen with WW2 fighter plane graphics and it's our first PoTM shot on a smartphone. Naturally, it helps having the stunning Lysefjord as a backdrop but it just goes to show that the photographer's eye still counts for more than the photographer's camera. Brought to you with kind permission from Tommy Lund, who also owns the car, we think the toothy decals really suit the Exige, particularly when set against the sharky titanium grey … [Read more...]

Elise Cup 250 – Track Test

Ever since going around Brands Hatch in the passenger seat of an Elise Cup 220 (thanks Tom) and having one to myself for an hour on the road (thanks Bell & Colvill) I have had nothing but praise for the flagship Elise. Retaining a delicacy, nimbleness and precision beyond even the Exige V6 and offering the sweetest steering on sale today, I was left deeply impressed. It was that rarest of things - a genuinely track-focused car that works brilliantly on the roads. Having had the uninterrupted joy of five years with a faultless Elise Sports Racer, I think that once … [Read more...]
