When the Lotus Carlton was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in 1990, it wasn’t just a new performance saloon—it was a statement. At a time when supercars were reserved for the wealthy elite and four-door family cars were expected to be sensible and sedate, Lotus tore up the rulebook. With its astonishing performance figures, the Carlton caused such a stir that it prompted discussions in the UK Parliament and led the Association of Chief Police Officers to campaign for it to be banned outright. Why? Because here was a four-door Vauxhall capable of outrunning Ferraris—with room for three passengers and a suitcase in the boot.
Produced between 1990 and 1992 under the internal Lotus designation “Type 104,” just 950 examples were ever built. Of these, 320 bore the Vauxhall Carlton badge for the UK market, while the remaining 630 were sold across Europe as the Opel Omega. All were hand-assembled by Lotus at their Hethel facility, and each was a technological marvel of its time. Powered by a heavily re-engineered 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, the Lotus Carlton delivered a staggering 377 bhp and could reach a top speed of approximately 180 mph—unheard of for a saloon car of the era.
The Lotus Carlton came exclusively in one colour: a deep, shimmering Imperial Green. However, for its 35th anniversary in 2025, two very special cars were revealed at Hethel in a striking white finish—a subtle nod to the timelessness of the design and the enduring legacy of this British-German collaboration.
On Friday, 15th August 2025, The Lotus Forums (TLF) had the honour of being invited to the Lotus factory to take part in a special celebration commemorating this iconic machine. The event brought together owners, enthusiasts, engineers, and historians to pay tribute to a car that rewrote the rules and shocked the establishment.
