Lotus Cup drivers have been given the opportunity of racing at the home of the Italian GP this spring. On the weekend of 9-11th March, drivers of Lotus Cup UK & Europe will join those from Lotus Cup Italia at the opening round of the 2012 World Touring Car Championship at Monza.
Supporting a major event which will see the FIA WTCC joined by its European counterpart, the FIA European Touring Car Championship (ETCC), and the Auto GP single seater series, the Lotus Cup drivers will compete in a 50 minute race. Additional track time will include two half hour free practice sessions, plus 30 minutes of qualifying.
The event recalls a successful 2009 visit by the series to Imola for the then Italian round of the WTCC, where Lotus drivers from the UK and Italy came together for the first time. The event included appearances from former MotoGP star Marco Melandri and 1970s Grand Prix hero Arturo Merzario, who regularly races in Lotus Cup Italy. The two series have since joined forces at Lotus Cupe Europe rounds in Magny-Cours and Spa.
